We have done this as grass roots enexpensively as possible since the late 90s (and by some metrics the late 80s)

After the pandemic, it has become very difficult to secure a training space at old school mid size town prices - For a while we sustained this with a rigorous nonprofit fund raiseing effort.  However, to do this correctly it is very time consuming.  And even with that renting a space in Portland ranges from 30 - 80 dollars an hour in the best senarios.  Gone are the years of a decent back room space, where we can create our own dance floor and split a small rent of 600 to 800 a month among a couple dozen people, and/or with othermovement  arts minded orgs.

We want people to be able to afford to play around the region, and also have a vibrant home community and training space, or set of training spaces near by where our beginners, adepts, team members, families, and core group members are living their lives both inside our group activities, and with their other interests and responsibilities.

We each get out of something what we put into it.

Many of the afterschool programs have limited number of kids that can be in a session during any given eight week period, once or twice a week - So, to accomidate the families that are asking for regular ongoing sessions for their children to train serveral times a week without worrying about the class size limits our board decided to rent a space (one at this point) for families to bring their kids to.

To help us be able to manage holding down a space for everyone to train, keep the cost down, and rent from arts groups who manage with likeable personalities - we require either a monthly or weekly attendace & class fee donation commitment.  This allows our treasurer to make recommendations of where we are renting from, and give the landlord notice, and better manage our time.

This is not a requirement, nor is it a requirement for anyone training in the other programs in the greater region t reach there next rank.   If you are in a school program, and that is all you or your family can do, or want to do, you will still be on track for any cord promotions due.  We love you, keep killing it  - we got chu.  This is simply for families and households who want or need more access or flexible access, or access times that are not in conflict with other activities.

While we are mindful at running a not-for-profit in a way that sponsors want to help some years, if we can pull our own weight without them other years, this is not a for profit business - it is community based organization ( Public BenefitState or Oregon and IRS recognized 5o1c3 - that plays as a team, or for artistic enrichment.

We used to be able to be caasual about expenses when we had access to church gym spaces for free prior to the pandemic.  Unfortunitely, this is nolonger possible. So, we have to be mindful of the change in the space rental landscape - associated insurances - and creating an artful atmosphere that lends to Capoeira Angola.

When signing up: indicate if you are paying for the month, or for the week.  Each week signup requires a two week commitment and then can be the following week.  Each month is month to month - if the payment is going to be late for anyreason, we get it, life gets in the way, let us know - and we can work you into the recycling fundraiser method.

(Be advised - the recycling method has a 'don't create unecessary work, follow exact to the T instructions - zero trash in the donation bags' - policy - Be ready to do the work without cancellation, follwoing our exact instructions (or don't volunteer).

We've been in the give program with the OBRC for decades, sent college kids to Brazil to train strictly from this program. Among other things. We know what works, we know what doesn't work - improvistation, or not listening to direction won't be taken lightly.  Not following our set of best practices gums up the give program machinery.  And it can get you injured.  Our not-for-Profit coaches other nonprofits on the best collection methods for street level fund raising. When you touch recycling for the not-for-profit your effort and work represents the not-for-profit. ( We love volunteers - we always can use volunteers and people who want to volunteer to help offset training costs who can follow direction without supervision)

If you want to help with class costs this way, you or your family must be committing to monthly envolvement (weekly on a case-by-case basis) and volunteer an minimum of 4 hours a month, in four hour blocks :-)

We are still using our recycling program to raise funds for after school program shirts, off set travel costs for people traveling to play, and help other kids groups in other regions of the world that we regularly travel to to play and compete.

We will add the sign-up drop down menus shortly

Kind Regards,

Contramestre David

  1. We have numerous places for people who are existing team members to train very freely in back rooms of gyms, yoga studios, etc., masques, temple & church gyms, schools etc that either work with their people, know our people, or other wise whom provide free space, they pay us space, or reduced rent space - for people they know in our group
  2. These are not drop-in programs - so, for new unaffiliated people we have to secure a space in advance
  3. So, all drop-ins are $20 USD drop-in donation in exchange for class, no less than three days before attending
